08 Jan Childhood Hearing Loss
Hearing loss does not only affect “older” people; it can affect infants, children, teens and adults of all ages.
If you suspect your child is not hearing well, they should be seen by a pediatric audiologist right away. Technological advancements have even made it possible to identify newborns with hearing loss within hours of being born.
Hearing devices developed specifically for children are available from pediatric audiologists whose training has included “brain activation” technology. They will customize the device based on your child’s age, stage of development and hearing loss. FTC does not approve generic “over-the-counter” hearing aids for children because they recognize the importance of having a professional involved in diagnosis and treating of childhood hearing loss.
Don’t avoid seeking help for your child because of some “stigma” of wearing hearing aids. Hearing is important for brain development. People of all ages, and especially children, who have a hearing loss feel alone and isolated. If your child cannot hear, they are missing out on important stimulus, learning and socialization. Hearing aids will activate young children’s brains and improve their brain development.
